Can I get a personal loan in the Carolinas with a recent bankruptcy? Some lenders consider it after the discharge, and your score may rebuild with time. Expect higher costs and more documents. Talk to a nonprofit counselor for a plan.
Is a personal loan the same as a payday loan? No. Personal loans repay in installments over months or years. Payday loans are short-term and expensive, and North Carolina prohibits them.
Does the APR include fees? It includes certain fees, which is why it is higher than the plain rate when fees exist. Compare APRs, and also compare total dollars repaid.
Should I pay off my loan early? Often yes, if there is no penalty and you will not drain your emergency savings to do so.
What does a lender do if I stop paying? It may charge late fees, report to the credit bureaus, send the account to collections and possibly sue. Call before you miss a payment to ask about hardship options.
Who do I call if I think I was scammed? Your bank, ReportFraud.ftc.gov and your state's attorney general or consumer affairs office.
Cost questions
What is a normal origination fee? Fees vary by lender and borrower, and some lenders charge none. Treat any fee as part of the cost and compare totals in dollars.
Why is my APR higher than the interest rate? The APR includes certain fees, so it shows a fuller yearly cost than the rate alone.
Can the rate change after I sign? Most personal loans have a fixed rate, but read the contract. Variable-rate terms must be disclosed.
Process questions
How long does it take to get money? Anywhere from the same day to about a week, depending on the lender, verification and your bank.
Do I need a bank account? Most lenders deposit funds electronically, so yes. Some use prepaid cards or checks.
Can I apply with a co-borrower? Some lenders allow it. A co-borrower shares responsibility for the full debt.
Credit questions
Will checking my rate hurt my score? Prequalification often uses a soft inquiry. A formal application may use a hard inquiry.
What if I have no credit history? Look at credit unions and credit-builder products, and consider a co-signer who understands the risk.
Safety questions
How do I know a website is real? Look for a physical address, a license number you can verify, clear terms and no requests for payment before funding.
What should I do if someone pressures me? End the conversation. Real lenders will give you time.
When to ask a professional
For legal questions about debts, consult an attorney or legal aid. For tax questions, a CPA. For debt plans, a nonprofit credit counselor. We can help you compare loans, not give advice on your specific legal or tax position.
Quick reference
Compare total cost. Verify the license. Never pay first. Ask about early payoff. Keep copies. Call early if you cannot pay.
